Then Jesus came to them and said:

“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
Therefore go and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of
the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit…

Matthew 28:18-19

The Apostles Creed:

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
the Creator of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord:
Who was conceived of the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended into hell.

The third day He arose again from the dead.

He ascended into heaven and
sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty,
whence He shall come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy *catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting.

Amen.

The word “catholic” refers not to the Roman Catholic Church, but to the universal church of the Lord Jesus Christ.

This is the oldest of many Christian Creeds. As A.W. Tozer said:

Our Church fathers found it necessary to create creeds that captured exactly what was the most important, absolute center of our Christian belief. And interwoven throughout these creeds is the sovereign fabric of the Trinity. It was Jesus’ claim of being part of the Trinity that was the reason He was crucified. He claimed “… to be equal to God.”

We are immediately challenged — not with our intellect, nor our reason but — with our faith to embrace the truth of the Trinity.

In reality, the truth of the Trinity isn’t unreasonable nor anti-intellectual but it does take revelation that comes when the Holy Spirit enlightens our minds. Then faith owns this foundation of foundations of our Christian belief.  For our Creed is the Gospel of our Faith and our Creed is the basis of the New and Everlasting Covenant signed by our God and Father with the Blood of His Son, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

This is what the saints of old have passed on to us.  This is the place where all truth of scripture rests, that our God is a Triune God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. One God in three persons:

  • The Son of Man could identify with my weakness.
  • The Son of Man died on the cross to save me from my sins.
  • The Son of Man came to reveal the Father to me.

Remember He said:

John 8:18

This is God the Father, Jesus, God who is not ashamed to call me His brother,  The Holy Spirit, God who teaches me, helps me, comforts me, dwells within me. The one God in three persons,
