Psalm 90:1-2

*        *       *       *     *    *
My God is Self Existent!
*        *       *       *     *

          He has no beginning.
                    No starting point.
                            He did not evolve
                                          He has no source of origin.
                                                    He simply is.

The easiest way to explain this attribute of our God is to create two columns.

On the top of the first one, title it “Self Existent,” and on the second, the title would be, “Created”.

Self ExistentCreated
God

The fact is, God alone would be in the first column, no one else.

When He introduced Himself to Moses at the burning bush, He said:

Exodus 3:14

Almost all of us can trace our origins back several generations, identifying of course our parents, our grandparents and some can name-names way-way back in their family genealogy, but not the one who calls Himself,

for He did not descend from anybody or anything, because He has no origin. Also, our Self Existent God is not limited by time nor by motion, neither is He confined by matter nor space. We simply cannot completely define Him by our limited understanding and intellect, but He has graciously revealed Himself to us through His creation, through His Word, and through His Son.

So yes, our God alone would be in the first column, no one else.

Everything else would be in the second column, “Created.”

Self ExistentCreated
GodEverything else

This includes:

  • Archangels like Michael and Gabriel, even Lucifer the fallen angel.
  • The heavens, and the earth, and hell.
  • mosquitoes and ants
  • you and me.

We’ve all been created!

We are all our God’s handiwork! It says as much in Colossians 1:16

This is our God who sits upon the throne in heaven, the God who is Self Existent, independent, the source of all life and light, the God of the Bible. As the planets revolve around the sun, so we were created to have God as the center of our existence.

A. W. Tozer in his book “Knowledge of the Holy” asks the question,

He answers his own question saying:

Today, we live in a culture where a high value is placed in the understanding of “self.” Supposedly, the more you know yourself, the more you are able to cope with life.

A.W. Tozer suggests, (and I agree)

A.W. Tozer goes on to say:

My God is,

You know what, Satan wanted to be placed within column one also.

Isaiah 14:13 says:

Satan wanted to sit upon his own throne. The great Satan, in his world, wanted all to revolve around him! He thought he had no need for God! He chose to get his needs met in his own way, choosing not to turn and serve his living loving God, the one true God, the Self Existent God to whom one day every knee will bow.

The Holy Spirit does not want us to commit the same sin that Satan committed.

Let me explain.

As A.W. Tozer says:

Therefore, like Satan, in the past we too have turned to our own sources to meet all our needs and yet, like Satan, we are just created beings.

* * * * *

Now right here let me highlight the two main sins in life, the sins of sins. The bottom line is that they both keep ourselves on the throne within our hearts. What are they?

Pride and Unbelief

And what do they both produce? Independence from God (rebellion).

These are the core sins in each of our lives, but the fact is, independence from God only brings death.

* * * *

And here’s our conflict: It is me and you the created versus the Self Existent One.

Now I have a question for you:

Have you truly surrendered the throne within your heart to Him and put yourself on the cross?

Does “I am who I am”, the Self Existent One, sit upon the throne of your heart or does the independent self still sit there, avoiding the cross? This is the question that must be answered. For me, my God is my source of all my light and life.
